Three-time NCAA champion UCLA rallied from a late deficit, scoring in the 90th minute to force overtime, then pulled out a wild 3-2 triumph Friday over Loyola Marymount in the first round of the Division I men’s soccer championships at the University of San Diego. Tim Pierce’s second goal of the game, after Jimmy Frazelle picked off an LMU pass, finished things in the 109th minute, sending the 20th-ranked Bruins (11-6-4) to a second-round encounter Sunday against USD (12-3-1). New Mexico (7-11-2) continued its stunning postseason run, winning its fourth successive match to earn an assignment against top-ranked SMU (19-0), and Maryland edged No. 18 Notre Dame with a goal in the 89th minute. UCLA, champion in 1985, 1990 and 1997, rallied from a 2-1 deficit, remaining alive when Cliff McKinley’s header found the net with 43 seconds to play. Alex Yi got his head on Ryan Futagaki’s corner kick, but LMU defender Matthew Kovar knocked the shot away. McKinley headed home the rebound. Pierce gave the Bruins a 32nd-minute lead on a rebound of a blocked Futagaki shot, but the Lions (9-7-2) — UCLA’s nearest rival, just 10 minutes south on the San Diego Freeway — took charge on goals by Kevin Novak in the 39th minute and Pat Parker in the 67th. “The win speaks well for our depth,” UCLA coach Todd Saldana said. “We’ve been down before, and again we showed the character it takes to come back.” San Diego has won the last two meetings, both at home, and clobbered the Bruins, 3-0, on Oct. 5. New Mexico advanced with a 1-0 upset of Florida International in Dallas as Junro Narita headed home William Junot’s 24th-minute corner kick. It was one of 10 1-0 results during 16 first-round matches on Friday. The Lobos went winless in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation regular-season action, finishing last — seven points behind the seventh-place Fresno State — before beginning its four-game run with a 3-2 overtime victory over top-seeded Sacramento State in the MPSF Tournament. The Lobos then blitzed UNLV, 3-0, and edged Fresno State, 1-0, in the title game, scoring (on their only shot of the match) 11 minutes into overtime. Maryland (11-8-1), the only home school playing on Friday, got a goal from Scott Buete with 1:41 to play to knock off Notre Dame, 1-0, and earn a second-round clash with No. 14 Loyola, Md. (16-1-2). Buete, who had missed the previous four matches after straining an MCL against Holy Cross on Oct. 31, took a feed from Ellis Welker and blasted the ball off Fighting Irish goalkeeper Chris Sawyer and into the net. It was the first NCAA victory for the Terps since 1998, when they reached the semifinals. In other first-round action: ò Yuri Morales dribbled past defenders, then fed Derek Rhodes, whose 20th-minute strike led Massachusetts to a 2-1 win over Creighton at Adelphi University in Garden City, N.Y. The Minutemen (15-5-1) take on No. 6 St. John’s in a second-round game Sunday. ò Scott Sheway’s breakaway goal, from a Nathan Fleetwood long ball, lifted Kentucky past Mercer, 1-0, in a downpour at Clemson, S.C. The Wildcats (14-5-1), who notched their first NCAA soccer victory, take on fourth-ranked Clemson on Sunday in a second-round game. ò Martin Rey’s overtime penalty kick sent UAB (14-5) past No. 17 Furman, 1-0, in the rain at Columbia, S.C., and to a second-round meeting Sunday with South Carolina. Paladin defender Moffat Oduor brought down Jose Rayo in the box in the 103rd minute, setting up Rey’s winning kick. ò Big East offensive player of the year Dennis Ludwig’s blast in the 81st minute carried 13th-ranked Rutgers past Harvard, 1-0, at Storrs, Conn. Sherif El Bialy headed Dustin Sheppard’s long throw-in into the center of the Crimson box for Ludwig, who one-timed it into the net. The Scarlet Knights (14-6-3) earned career victory No. 299 for Coach Bob Reasso and go for No. 300 on Sunday against No. 8 Connecticut. ò Thomas Trivelloni’s goal in the 84th minute gave Michigan State a 2-1 triumph over Butler at Bloomington, Ind., the Spartans’ first NCAA victory since 1969. Craig Hearn also tallied for Michigan State, which will take on seventh-ranked Indiana on Sunday. Butler got a goal from Chance Ernst and nearly tied the score in the 90th minute, when Nick Pantazi’s shot struck a post. ò Anthony Chimienti pounced on a loose ball during the third overtime period and fired Santa Clara past California, 1-0, and into a second-round game at Stanford. Chimienti, who shot wide on an open net in the 98th minute, netted the winner in the 133 minute — his fourth successive game-winning goal — after three Cal defenders failed to clear a Burke Ewers free kick. The Broncos (12-8), who avenged an earlier defeat to the Bears, held a 12-2 shot advantage over 43 minutes of extra time. ò Nate Jacqua’s 70th-minute tally, his ninth goal of the season, enabled Portland to avenge a defeat to Gonzaga with a 1-0 triumph in Seattle. Jacqua found the net after Kelly Gray’s blast from the right wing caromed off the far post, sending the 19th-ranked Pilots (12-5-1) into Sunday’s clash with Washington. ò Jason Woods’ header nine minutes into overtime lifted UM Kansas City (12-6-1) past UW Milwaukee, 1-0, and into a second-round clash with second-ranked St. Louis. Woods scored off a Dan Hilson corner kick that was sent to the middle of the UWM box by Mike Reiter. ò Machel Millwood scored two goals and assisted on another, and Randy Tolson added a goal and an assist as Towson (16-4-1) pulled away in the final half hour to a 4-1 victory over James Madison, advancing to second-round encounter with ninth-ranked North Carolina. ò Jeff Kinney and Andrew Herman scored in the first six minutes and American held off Ohio State, 2-1, at Winston-Salem, N.C. Kinney finished off a corner kick in the third minute and Herman tallied after a failed Buckeye clearance as the Eagles (12-7-2) advanced to Sunday’s game against Wake Forest. ò Aaron Paye scored his 15th goal of the season two minutes into the third overtime to carry Fairleigh Dickinson to a 1-0 triumph over Boston College at Princeton, N.J. The Knights (15-6), who face Princeton on Sunday, played a man short from the 81st minute, when Johnny David was sent off following his second yellow card. Paye’s took a pass from Joe DiBuono, beat a defender, then fired past BC goalkeeper Danny Caruso for the 122nd-minute goal. ò Ryan McGowan headed in a Ryan Witt cross in the 63rd minute to lead Seton Hall to a 2-1 victory over Coastal Carolina at Charlottesville, Va. The Pirates (11-6-2), who took a ninth-minute lead on Phil Swenda’s header, take on No. 5 Virginia in the second round. ò Kevin Cowan’s 76th-minute goal lifted South Florida (15-6) past Akron, 2-1, and into a second-round clash Sunday at Penn State.
