No. 22 Penn became the second team to clinch a berth in the NCAA Men's Division I tournament when it tied Princeton, 0-0. The Quakers clinched a share of the Ivy League title, a feat they had not accomplished in 22 years. They take the automatic berth by virtue of their win over Dartmouth, the only team with a chance to catch them. Penn's tournament bid is its first in 25 years.
Atlantic Soccer champion Florida International clinched the Atlantic Soccer title last week.
No. 6 Cal moved into first place in the Pac-10 with 1-0 wins over No. 5 UCLA and Fresno State. UCLA turned around two days later to beat No. 9 Stanford, 1-0, and remain in contention for the Pac-10 title. (Pac-10 teams play each other twice; there is no conference tournament.)
In the WCC, the only other conference that has no tournament sends its regular-season champion to the NCAA tournament, No. 13 Loyola Marymount and No. 20 Portland moved into first place with one game remaining.
No. 25 UC Santa Barbara clinched its second straight Big West title with a 3-0 win over UC Riverside. The Big West doesn't get an automatic berth in the men's tournament until next year, so the Gauchos will have to wait until the tournament field is announced to see if they are in the 48-team field.
Conference tournament play began for Soccer America Top 25 teams in the Big East, Missouri Valley and Horizon. No. 2 St. John's, No. 8 Connecticut and No. 17 Boston College all won in the Big East quarterfinals, but No. 15 Notre Dame fell to Georgetown, 2-1, on Trevor Goodrich's golden goal, his second goal of the game. In the Missouri Valley, No. 3 SMU and No. 18 Creighton advanced to the semifinals with big wins. No. 19 Wisconsin-Milwaukee extended its winning streak to 16 games — the longest in the country — with a 2-0 win over Loyola (Ill.) in the Horizon quarterfinals.
No. 1 Wake Forest tuned up for the ACC tournament with an 8-0 win over Georgia Southern and extended its record to 14-0-4. In the only other game involving Top 25 teams, No. 14 North Carolina beat No. 24 South Carolina, 2-0. Elmar Bolowich won his 175th game to surpass Marvin Allen as UNC's all-time winningest coach. Two other ACC teams, No. 10 Maryland and No. 12 Clemson, needed overtime to beat unranked Mt. St. Mary's and Western Illinois, respectively.
No. 7 Furman extended its consecutive shutout streak to seven matches — tied for the 12th longest in NCAA D1 history — with a 3-0 win over Davidson. The Paladins, who have not been scored upon since returning to action after the death of freshman star Gary Griffin, also extended their Southern Conference unbeaten streak to 41 matches, pulling to within one of the NCAA D1 record of 42 held by Clemson (1972-1980).
