San Jose State will host the 1999 and 2000 NCAA women’s final fours, bringing the event to the West Coast for the third time since its inauguration in 1982. The 1998 final four returns to Greensboro, N.C., where in 1997 it set a record by selling 18,493 tickets for the semifinals and final. San Jose State started its women’s soccer program in 1995 and had winning seasons in its first two years before going 9-10-0 in 1997. The Spartans have yet to reach the NCAAs. The last West Coast final four was down the road from at Santa Clara and sold out both game days. “The sport of women’s soccer is fortunate to have an institution located within a tremendous soccer community so dedicated to hosting these events,” said Kathy Lindahl, associate director of athletics at Michigan State and the chair of the NCAA women’s soccer committee. “The West Coast has proven itself as a tremendous area for the student-athletes to enjoy this weekend of women’s soccer.” San Jose State’s Spartan Stadium is being widened for MLS’s Clash and the ’99 Women’s World Cup.
