Charlie Slagle, who helped build the men’s college final four into a popular event in the early ’90s, is leaving Davidson College, where he has been the head coach for 21 years, to become the chief operating officer of the Capital Area Soccer League (CASL) in Raleigh, N.C. The CASL is one of the most ambitious youth leagues in the country with 25 full-time employees. Slagle turned the Davidson program around when he arrived in 1980. He had a 209-202-31 record, winning Southern Conference Coach of the Year honors seven times. He led the Wildcats to the final four in 1992, the first year they hosted the final four. Davidson ended years of disinterest, drawing capacity crowds each of the three years it hosted the final four.
