Sonoma State won its first NCAA Division II men's title when it beat Southern New Hampshire Sunday afternoon in Virginia Beach, Va.
SNHU twice led on goals by Anthony Augustine and Mounir Tajiou, but Sonoma State recovered on goals by Brian Coyne and Brandon Boone before moving ahead on goals by Michael Nathan and Tony Bussard late in the second half. Barbados international Romelle Burgess scored with eight seconds remaining for SNHU's third goal.
Boone's overtime goal had given Sonoma State a 2-1 win over Central Arkansas in the semifinals.
The Seawolves, who finished second in 1989, are only the third California team to win the Division II men's title after Cal State Bakersfield in 1997 and Cal State Dominguez Hills in 2000.
