Seth George scored two goals in a three-minute stretch late in the second half to give UCLA a 2-0 victory over Virginia in the 1997 NCAA Championship final in Richmond, Va. Virginia controlled the early part of the second half, winning several free kicks just outside the UCLA penalty area, but the Cavaliers were unable to convert their opportunities, and UCLA keeper Matt Reis made a fine sive to deny Jason Moore in the 53rd minute. The Bruins’ first goal came off of a counterattack in the 80th minute. A long ball from Virginia’s Moore was headed clear by the UCLA defense, and Josh Keller streaked up the middle of the field on the counter. He then slid a superb ball forward to an unmarked Martin Bruno, who held the ball for a moment before passing to a streaking George in the left half of the box, and George beat Virgnia keeper Brock Yetso with a strike to the far post. With Virginia pressing forward for an equalizer, the Bruins quickly struck again. A ball was played in to McKinley Tennyson, who collided with the onrushing Yetso as he entered the box. The ball bounced free towards the right side of the box, where the onrushing George pounced on it and sent it into the lower right corner for an insurmountable 2-0 lead.
