Hugo Perez, who earned 73 U.S. caps while scoring 13 goals in 1984-1994, has been named assistant coach of the University of San Francisco men's team.
Perez, who played for the USA at the 1984 Olympics and 1994 World Cup, and helped the Americans qualify for the 1988 Olympics and 1990 World Cup, joins head coach Eric Visser, who is in his second year at the helm since succeeding longtime USF boss Stephen Negoesco.
Visser also named former Santa Clara goalkeeper David Alexander the Dons' goalkeeper coach and promoted Kristen Lehrer to full-time assistant.
Perez, a native of El Salvador who was raised in Southern California, turned pro as a teen-ager, joining the NASL's Los Angeles Aztecs. He played for the NASL's Tampa Bay Rowdies and San Diego Sockers, for which he also had a long indoor career. Perez also had pro stints in France, Norway and El Salvador.
