No. 15 seed Boston College and 16th-seeded Illinois were upset Friday in the first round of the NCAA tournament, but third-seeded Florida and seventh-seeded Virginia survived scares to reach the second round.
No. 1 North Carolina and second-seeded Notre Dame won in romps over the two weakest teams in the field, and all five of the Southeastern Conference's NCAA combatants reached the second round.
Boston College and Illinois were beaten at home. The Eagles fell to Central Connecticut State, 1-0, and the Illini were trumped by Western Michigan, 2-0.
Virginia needed penalty kicks to get past William & Mary, and Florida overcame Central Florida, 3-2, in overtime.
North Carolina scored eight on High Point and Notre Dame netted five against Loyola-Chicago. Florida State also scored five goals in a romp over Dartmouth.
Portland and Santa Clara, controversially seeded eighth and ninth by the NCAA Division I women's soccer committee, scored 1-0 victories over Denver and Stanford, respectively, to move within one match of a third-round showdown. The West Coast Conference powers met in last year's final, with Portland prevailing in overtime.
Two all-SEC matchups await in the second round, with Florida playing host to Mississippi (which upset Texas) and Tennessee home against Georgia (which upset Clemson). Auburn also won its opener and plays at Florida State.
There's only one other second-round game between conference rivals, with Big 12 foes Kansas and Missouri meeting in Columbia, Mo., in the weakest first- and second-round quartet in the field.
The strongest quartet, at Santa Clara, saw the Broncos outlast Stanford and Arizona State get timely goals in a victory over Cal Poly.
A rundown of Friday's first-round action:
At Chapel Hill, N.C.: Top-ranked North Carolina (22-0-0) romped, 8-0, past Big South tournament winner High Point (10-10-1) but Wake Forest, the other ACC team in the quartet, was felled by Southern Conference tournament champ UNC Greensboro, 2-1. The Tar Heels got goals from seven players, two by Corinne Black, as Anson Dorrance emptied his bench just 21 minutes in. Carolina had a 41-1 edge in shots, scoring twice in the first eight minutes, three times in the first 14 and five times by halftime. Lindsay Tarpley added a goal and an assist. UNCG (13-6-2) upset Wake Forest as Jaime Ableman and Rakel Logadottir scored goals nine minutes apart midway through the second half. A.B. Robbins scored in the final seconds for the Demon Deacons (10-7-3).
At Champaign, Ill.: Chantal Robinson curled a 25-yard free kick inside the near post midway through the first half, and Jessica Pattison added insurance after stripping a defender, and MAC tournament champion Western Michigan (14-7-1) stunned 16th-seeded Illinois, 2-0, the Broncos' 10th successive victory. The Illini finished 16-4-2. Purdue (13-5-3) scored a 2-1 win over DePaul (14-7-2) as Courtney Coppedge and Jennie Moppert scored goals.
At Santa Clara, Calif.: Freshman Marian Dalmy, seeing her first action after being sidelined six matches with a high ankle sprain, slotted home Veronica Zepeda's low cross to lift Santa Clara (13-3-5) to a 1-0 win over nearby rival Stanford (10-9-2). Katie Mahoney finished Manya Makoski's cross just 18 seconds in, and Brittany Cooper set up one second-half goal and scored another 51 seconds later as Arizona State (13-4-3) scored a 3-1 win over Cal Poly (18-2-2).
At Portland, Ore.: Portland used stiff defense and a 23rd-minute goal by Lindsey Huie to beat Denver, 1-0, and Jenna Cooper's 89th-minute goal carried Nebraska past Washington, 2-1. The host Pilots (17-3-1) avenged an August defeat to Denver (18-4-0) as Huie headed in a Kristen Rogers cross. Nebraska (13-7-1) won as Cooper set up Jessie Bruch's 18th-minute header and netted the winner with a snaking free kick that ricocheted off a defender en route to the goal. Kim Taylor took advantage of a poor clearance for Washington (11-7-3) early in the second half, but the Cornhuskers made several huge defensive plays — the biggest: Ashley Carter blocking a Kim Taylor shot that had beaten goalkeeper Katie Wright midway through the second half.
At University Park, Pa.: Penn State (17-3-2) hammered visiting Navy (17-5-1), and Rutgers (10-6-5) got past Maryland (11-8-2) on penalty kicks. Heidi Drummond scored two goals and assisted a third, and Tiffany Weimer and Joanna Lohman each contributed a goal and an assist, as the Nittany Lions romped, 5-1. Carli Lloyd fired Rutgers ahead in the first half and Maryland's Katie Ludwig answered in the second half of a 1-1 tie; the Scarlet Knights won the shootout, 4-3, as goalkeeper Robyn Jones halted Danielle Malagari on the final kick.
At College Station, Texas: Kati Jo Spisak saved one penalty to win her third NCAA shootout and lead Texas A&M past SMU after a 1-1 tie. Kim Harvey's 28th goal of the season sent the Mustangs (17-3-2) ahead in the 11th minute, but Kristen Strutz's diving header in the 40th pulled A&M (12-5-3) even. The Aggies won the tiebreaker, 4-2. Duke (14-6-1) rolled, 3-0, past Southland tournament winner Stephen F. Austin (15-5-2) as Casey McCluskey scored twice.
At Columbia, Mo.: Kristen Heil's 48th-minute goal gave host Missouri (12-10-1) a 1-0 trumph over Eastern Illinois (11-6-5), the Tigers' first NCAA tournament victory. Kansas (17-5-1) got two goals from Jessica Kilpatrick in a 3-1 win over Illinois State (11-6-3).
At Los Angeles: Freshman Bristyn Davis set up Lindsay Greco's 24th-minute goal, then doubled the advantage 34 seconds later as No. 2 UCLA (17-1-3) earned a 2-0 victory over visiting San Diego (9-8-4). Pepperdine (14-5-1) overcame USC (9-8-4), 1-0, on Lacey Ubaldi's early goal.
At Gainesville, Fla.: Florida (17-3-2), the surprising choice as third seed, needed overtime to get past Atlantic Sun champ Central Florida (16-5-1), and Mississippi (15-4-2) upset Texas (11-9-0). Jordan Kellgren's second goal, in the 105th minute, carried the host Gators (17-3-2) to a 3-2 triumph. Crystal Frimpong, who set up Christine Johnson's 17th-minute opener, darted past the UCF defense to feed Kellgren for the winner. The Golden Knights answered the Gators' first two goals with strikes by Courtney Baines and Jennifer Montgomery. Megan Mattei's 33rd-minute shot to the upper-left corner and a strong performance by goalkeeper Brittany Gillespie led Ole Miss past Texas, 1-0.
At Knoxville, Tenn.: Georgia (13-9-0) got goals from Geneil Newbern and Randi-Lynn Bruso in the final eight minutes to overcome Clemson, 2-1. The Tigers (11-7-2) had gone ahead on Amanda Garcia's goal in the 58th minute, but Newbern — who had survived a head-on collision four minutes earlier — tallied after splitting two defenders in the 83rd minute, and Bruso chipped in the 89th-minute winner. Tennessee (16-4-2) scored a 1-0 victory over Oklahoma (8-7-5) as Lyndsey Patterson finished from Rhian Wilkinson's 23rd-minute cross.
At Tallahassee, Fla.: Camie Bybee scored a pair of goals and Florida State (14-7-1) tallied four times during a 14-minute stretch midway through the second half in a 5-0 rout of Ivy League champ Dartmouth (9-6-2). Julia Schnugg, India Trotter and Rachel McDowell also tallied for the Seminoles, who got two assists from both Leah Gallegos and Jez Ratleff. Auburn (14-3-3) topped Oklahoma State (15-5-3), 1-0, on Jac Schwarz's third-minute goal. Schwarz fired after Sarah Steinmann's chip rolled down teammate Chrissy Culver's back.
At Morgantown, W.Va.: Chrissie Abbott scored a goal and dished off two assists, becoming West Virginia's career points leader, to lead the Mountaineers (16-3-2) to a 4-2 victory over Loyola, Md. (12-9-1). Leslie Barden, Lisa Zanti and Nicole Cauzillo also scored for West Virginia. Ohio State 13-4-3) romped, 3-0, past Dayton (14-6-2) as Kathy Fulk, Liz Mumley and Jen Heaney scored goals.
At Charlottesville, Va.: Virginia (12-5-3) failed to win for the fifth time in six games, escaping with a 4-2 triumph on penalty kicks following a 1-1 draw with CAA tournament champion William & Mary (14-6-3). Jamie Fabrizio scored from Kelly Hammond's feed to give the Cavaliers an eighth-minute lead, but Katie Hogwood headed home a long Anna Young free kick, the Tribe's only shot in regulation, to even things early in the second half. All four Virginia shooters connected during the tiebreaker, but William & Mary's Lindsey Vanderspiegel hit the right post and UVa goalkeeper Anne Abernethy stopped Young's shot. Villanova (15-5-3) toppled Princeton, 2-1, as Elizabeth Dauble scored in the 23rd minute and set up Lindsey Finnegan in the 24th. Theresa Sherry headed in a Maura Gallagher free kick for the Tigers (11-3-3) later in the first half.
At Chestnut Hill, Mass.: Northeast Conference champion Central Connecticut State (16-2-3) stunned 15th-seeded Boston College (15-3-3), pulling out a 1-0 victory on Kelly Shimmin's 60th-minute goal. BC had a 24-8 shot advantage, but goalkeeper Ashley Ferra made nine saves and Shimmin fired into an empty net off a rebound to lead the Blue Devils. Connecticut (11-5-3) overcame America East champion Boston University (12-6-5), 1-0, on Kristen Graczyk's her fifth career NCAA tournament goal. The junior forward scored from Jessica Gjertsen's cross in the 85th minute.
At Notre Dame, Ind.: Freshman Jen Buczkowski scored a pair of goals and Katie Thorlakson assisted two as second-seeded Notre Dame (20-2-1) routed Loyola-Chicago (10-11-0), 5-0. Kimberly Carpenter, Christie Shaner and Jill Krivacek also tallied for the Fighting Irish, who owned 31-3 shot and 12-0 corner kick advantages and built a 4-0 lead by halftime. Notre Dame was without forward Amy Warner (ankle), and Amanda Guertin and Mary Boland were held out until the second half with injuries. Michigan (10-7-6) reached the second round for the sixth successive year as Katie Kramer finished Laura Tanchon's 63rd-minute throughball to beat Oakland (15-5-1), 1-0.
