Bowling Green University freshman Leslie Dawley died Tuesday after collapsing early in a Mid-American Conference tournament game against Buffalo.
The 18-year-old midfielder, from Westerville, Ohio, received immediate medical attention and was then transported to Wood County Hospital, near the Bowling Green campus. No further details were released.
The match was scoreless in the sixth minute when Dawley collapsed. It was halted and will be replayed Wednesday morning in her honor, at the request of Dawley's parents, who were in attendance.
''In light of today's tragic events, the game of soccer pales into insignificance …,'' Bowling Green coach Andy Richards said in a statement. ''Soccer is what brought Leslie to Bowling Green, and — as hard as it is going to be to play that game — it is fitting to remember Leslie in the game she loves.''
Dawley was making her 19th appearance of the season and her seventh start. She had six assists for the Falcons (11-7-2), who were seeded third in the MAC tournament.
In other MAC quarterfinals on Tuesday, top-seeded Miami, Ohio drilled Central Michigan, 5-0, and will play host to the tournament final four Friday and Sunday; Ohio University edged Eastern Michigan, 1-0; and Ball State topped Western Michigan, 3-1.
Miami will face the Bowling Green-Buffalo winner and Ball State meets Ohio in the semifinals.
