Dartmouth clinched at least a share of the Ivy League women's soccer championship, one of five universities to claim regular-season conference titles on Saturday.
Christina Ferraris' overtime goal lifted the Big Green past Harvard, 2-1, at Cambridge, Mass., securing the Ivy League's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. A win or tie at home against Cornell on Nov. 9 would give Dartmouth the outright Ivy title. Princeton would earn a share of the crown with a victory next Saturday over Penn and a Cornell victory.
Dartmouth is the first school to earn a berth in the 64-team NCAA tournament. Brackets will be announced Nov. 10.
The Ivy League is one of three Division I conferences, along with the Pacific 10 and West Coast, that selects its NCAA qualifier through regular-season play. The other 26 conferences with automatic NCAA bids rely on postseason tournaments to determine their NCAA entrants.
Navy, Weber State, Coastal Carolina and Liberty also earned conference titles on Saturday, and Boston University and Utah completed title runs that earlier had gained them at least a share of their conferences' championships.
Navy got two goals from Meggie Curran and three assists from Stacy Finley to blast Bucknell, 4-0, and clinch a share of the Patriot League championship. American University can grab a piece of the title — along with the right to play host to the conference tournament — with a victory Sunday over Army.
Lindsay McFarland's overtime goal lifted Weber State past visiting Northern Arizona, 1-0, in a showdown for the Big Sky Conference title played in snow flurries and 30-degree temperatures. Northern Arizona would have won the championship had the match ended in a draw.
Coastal Carolina shared the Big South title with Liberty after settling for a 1-1 tie with last-place Charleston Southern. UNC Asheville also could have earned a piece of the crown with a victory Saturday over seventh-place Birmingham Southern, but the Bulldogs were beaten, 3-2. Liberty, which finished its Big South schedule on Monday, is the top seed for the conference tournament next week in High Point, N.C.
No. 14 Utah won the Mountain West Conference title outright by beating No. 16 Brigham Young, 1-0, in Provo, Utah, on Amanda Feigt's overtime goal. The Utes last week clinched a tie for the title; they would have shared it with BYU had the Cougars won.
Boston University, which last week clinched a tie for the America East Conference crown, claimed the title outright with a 4-0 romp over visiting Binghamton as Lauren Ciccone scored two goals.
