Hurricane Frances' impending arrival has led the University of Miami and Florida Atlantic University to call off their women's soccer games Friday and Sunday.
Miami, located in Coral Gables, and FAU, in Boca Raton, had home matches scheduled this weekend against third-ranked Florida State and SEC contender Georgia. The Seminoles were to open their Atlantic Coast Conference schedule Friday at Miami.
Details on when, or whether, the matches will be made up had not been determined as of Wednesday afternoon.
The storm also caused Jacksonville to move its home opener, against South Florida, up by a day. The match, initially scheduled for Friday afternoon, will be played Thursday at noon ET.
Hurricane Frances is expected to hit the southeastern U.S. as early as Friday, and it could play havoc with soccer schedules throughout Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas.
Georgia's match Monday night at home against Georgia State, a 1-1 tie, was halted in the 81st minute because of lightning. Inclement weather also cancelled or postponed four Division I matches.
Hurricane (and, later, Tropical Storm) Gaston washed away three games on Sunday: North Carolina State at Coastal Carolina, East Carolina at UNC Wilmington, and Villanova vs. Georgia Southern in Charleston, S.C.
Lightning forced cancellation, following a two-and-a-half hour delay, of the Soutwest Missouri State at Iowa game last Friday.
