Fans packed the Seminole Soccer Complex, where attendance was listed at a record 4,582 fans, 3,000 above listed capacity. They stood on the hills in the stadium and on the parking garage across the street.

They didn't go home disappointed as Florida State, No. 1 in the Soccer America Women's Top 25, beat No. 24 Florida, 1-0, Friday night on Australian Sel KuralayÆs goal from 30 yards out with less than three minutes remaining in the first half.

Last year, one of Kuralay's two goals against the Gators was scored in similar circumstances.

ôI saw [Florida keeper Brittni Goodwin] off the line,ö said Kuralay. ôLast yearÆs keeper also did the same thing. I think they get a bit confident. I spotted her off her line and tried to bend it in over the top of her. This is a big rivalry so it is nice to be able to help my team out in these games.ö

CHENEY MAKES STATEMENT

Much-heralded freshman Lauren Cheney scored in her college debut to give No. 5 UCLA a 2-1 victory over No. 4 Texas A&M at the UCLA Women's Cup. Cheney was one of five UCLA starters making their first appearances of the season after returning from the U-20 Women's World Championship. Danesha Adams, winner of the Bronze Ball in Russia, scored UCLA's first goal.

Chioma Igwe scored off a corner kick by Amanda Poach, one of the stars of the U.S. team that finished fourth at the U-20 Women's World Championship, to give No. 3 Santa Clara a 2-1 victory over No. 12 UConn in the opening game of the UCLA Women's Cup.

No. 2 Notre Dame won, 2-0, at TCU on goals by Jill Krivacek and Brittany Bock, who was also playing her first game of the 2006 season since returning from Russia.

RAPINOE HAT TRICK

Playing her first game since returning from the U-20 World Championship, Tobin Heath scored in her debut for No. 7 North Carolina in the Tar Heels' 4-0 win over Washington. Forward Casey Nogueira, another U.S. U-20, also made her collegiate debut. Two other freshman also scored for UNC: Whitney Engen and Sterling Smith. In the second game of the Nike Invitational, host Portland crushed Baylor, 5-0. Megan Rapinoe scored three first-half goals, all off assists by fellow U.S. international Angie Woznuk.

U-20 Jess Rostedt also scored in her first game back to help No. 15 Virginia beat No. 25 Georgia, 2-0, at the Virginia Nike Classic.

Brittany Timko, who missed the start of the college season to play for Canada's national team on its tour of France, earned the fourth hat trick of her career as she led No. 20 Nebraska to a 3-2 win over North Texas.

MOUNTAINEERS ROLL

No. 9 West Virginia is for real. The Mountaineers were rewarded for their early dominance with goals by Natalie Cocchi and Deana Everrett on either side of halftime to beat No. 8 Penn State, 2-1, on the road. The upset avenges last yearÆs second-round NCAA Tournament loss to the Nittany Lions and broke Penn StateÆs 16-game home unbeaten streak.

Utah (4-1-0) got a pair of second-half goals from Melissa Wayman and Hailey Marsh to beat No. 22 Fresno State, 2-0, and hand the Bulldogs their first loss of the season.
