Second-seeded Notre Dame was upset by Michigan for the second time in 18 days, and defending NCAA Division I champion Portland advanced to a title-game rematch with archrival Santa Clara as second-round play was completed Sunday in the NCAA tournament.

Villanova surprised seventh-seeded Virginia on penalty kicks, and third-seeded Florida rallied from a three-goal deficit to topple SEC rival Mississippi in overtime.

Florida, Florida State and Connecticut advanced via golden goals.

Four teams — Kansas, Purdue, Villanova and West Virginia — advanced to the Sweet 16 for the first time.

Notre Dame dominated Michigan but couldn't generate a goal from its injury-impacted frontline, dropping a 1-0 decision on its Alumni Field. Villanova won its third shootout in four games to eliminate Virginia, which won on penalties in the first round.

West Coast Conference rivals Santa Clara and Portland, ranked Nos. 3 and 4 in the country, will face off in a third-round match next Sunday in Oregon. Santa Clara won the first meeting, 2-1, in overtime.

The Broncos and Pilots have won the past two NCAA titles, but controversial seeding determinations placed the perennial final-four qualifiers in the same tournament bracket. The winner likely will meet No. 1 North Carolina in the quarterfinals.

A look at Sunday's action:

North Carolina 5 UNC Greensboro 0: Lindsay Tarpley tied an NCAA tournament record with four assists and Heather O'Reilly netted a pair of goals as top-ranked North Carolina (23-0-0) romped in Chapel Hill, N.C. The Tar Heels will play host to Purdue in a third-round match on Friday. Lori Chalupny, Alyssa Ramsey and Elizabeth Guess also scored for the Tar Heels, who scored 13 goals in winning its opening quartet. Tarpley's four assists gave her 20 for the season, to go with 20 goals. She's the third Carolina player to score 20 goals with 20 assists in a season, joining Mia Hamm (32-33 in 1992) and Robin Confer (20-22 in 1997). UNC Greensboro finishes at 15-7-2.

Purdue 3 Western Michigan 2: The Boilermakers (14-5-3) rallied from two deficits to win at Champaign, Ill., with Lauren Sesselmann scoring an 80th-minute winner. Western Michigan (14-8-1), which upset host Illinois in the first round, took leads on Chantal Robinson free kicks in the 60th and 73rd minutes, a Chelsea McNally header and Megan Urbats rebound. Purdue evened things in the 69th and 76th minutes, with Annette Kent scoring from Sesselmann's feed and setting up Courtney Coppedge. The Boilermakers will play at North Carolina on Friday in a third-round clash.

Santa Clara 1 Arizona State 0: Tina Estrada's 19th-minute goal was the difference as the Broncos (14-3-5) beat the visiting Sun Devils (13-5-3) in the second round for the second successive year. Santa Clara, which determined the first-half tempo and battled in a second-half midfield war, gets another rematch with defending NCAA champion Portland next Sunday. Estrada let Lana Bowen's feed roll past two defenders before finishing. Leslie Osborne started the sequence.

Portland 4 Nebraska 1: The Pilots (18-3-1) dominated play in wet, windy conditions to earn a rematch with WCC rival Santa Clara in the third round. Lindsey Huie and Wanda Rozwadowska scored first-half goals and Kristen Moore and Lisa Sara added second-half strikes as Portland romped to a 4-0 lead. Moore's goal, a 30-yard blast from the left flank, was spectacular. Nebraska (13-8-1) was under siege in the first half, when the Pilots had a strong wind at their backs; the winds died down at halftime, leaving the Cornhuskers no advantage. Canadian World Cup standout Brittany Timko scored for Nebraska in the 81st minute.

Penn State 3 Rutgers 1: Joanna Lohman scored a pair of goals and Heidi Drummond added a goal and two assists as the Nittany Lions (18-3-2) grabbed an early lead and held on for the second-round victory. Lohman headed home Drummond's corner kick in the fourth minute, and Drummond doubled the lead in the seventh. Carli Lloyd's lob pulled visiting Rutgers (10-7-5) within a goal in the 15th minute; Lohman secured the victory in the 85th, Penn State, which has won its past 29 home games, will play host to Texas A&M next Saturday or Sunday.

Texas A&M 2 Duke 1: Suzette Devloo and Emma Smith scored goals two and a half minutes apart and the Aggies (13-5-3) gave Coach G. Guerreri his 200th victory at College Station, Texas. Devloo scored on a diving header from Laura Probst's cross at the end of the first half, and Smith ripped an 18-yard shot from Kat Krambeer's header in the second minute of the second half. A&M survived a 60th-minute sequence in which Shannon Labhart and Linda Pierson cleared headers by Casey McCluskey and Carolyn Riggs off the goal line, but Riggs brought Duke (14-7-1) within a goal with a looping shot to the upper-right corner four minutes later. Aggies goalkeeper Kati Jo Spisak halted Carmen Bognanno 1-on-1 in the 74th to secure the triumph. A&M will play at Penn State on Saturday or Sunday.

Kansas 2 Missouri 0: Caroline Smith netted her 19th goal of the season and Carmel Kaplinger added 89th-minute insurance as the Jayhawks (18-3-1) pulled out a tight victory over their Big 12 rivals at Columbia, Mo. Smith scored from a deflected corner kick in the 78th minute; Kaplinger beat a defender and finished Kimberly Karfonta's feed. Missouri finished at 12-11-1. Kansas plays at No. 2 UCLA in the third round next Sunday.

UCLA 2 Pepperdine 0: Iris Mora and Lindsay Greco scored goals 44 minutes apart and the Bruins (18-1-3) shut down the Waves (14-6-1) in a second-round clash in Westwood. Mora headed in Amy Fazio's cross in the 62nd minute, and Greco scored from Jill Oakes' pass in the 63rd. UCLA had a 24-1 shot advantage as its backline — led by All-American Nandi Pryce — muzzled Pepperdine's attackers. The Bruins will play host to Kansas in a third-round game next Sunday.

Florida 4 Mississippi 3: The third-seeded Gators (18-3-2) rallied from a 3-0 deficit and pulled out a second-round victory over their SEC rivals on Ashley Kellgren's overtime goal at Gainesville, Fla. The victory was Florida coach Becky Burleigh's 250th. Ole Miss (15-5-2) built an advantage on goals by Hillary Beckman in the 23rd minute, Karen Hall in the 52nd and Brittney Potts in the 54th, scoring the first and third after Gator turnovers. Florida rallied as Robin Fulton scored from a Kellgren pass in the 62nd minute and Megan McMillan netted goals in the 64th and 71st, the first off a Melanie Booth corner kick, the tying strike from Tina Frimpong's pass. Florida had a chance to tie in the 66th, but Rebels goalkeeper Brittany Gillespie made a diving save on Dena Floyd's penalty kick after Frimpong was fouled. Kellgren's winner arrived from a long pass by Booth. The Gators seek their first win in three meetings this season with SEC rival Tennessee in a third-round clash next weekend.

Tennessee 1 Georgia 0: Canadian World Cup forward Rhian Wilkinson knocked home a rebound in the 61st minute at Knoxville, Tenn., and the Lady Vols (17-4-2) beat their SEC rivals for the second time this season to reach the third round for the second year in a row. Wilkinson scored from a goal-mouth scramble after Sue Flamini's shot was blocked. Tennessee earned its fifth shutout in six games when Keeley Dowling cleared Kelly Whitaker's shot off the goal line in the 50th minute. Georgia (13-10-0) missed another chance when Jessica Winton hit the crossbar late in the first half. Tennessee plays at SEC rival Florida in a third-round game next weekend.

Florida State 2 Auburn 1: Leah Gallegos' 17th goal of the season, an overtime header, carried the Seminoles (15-7-1) into the Sweet 16 for the third time in four years. Amber Tollefson also scored for Florida State, which overcame a first-half deficit to reach a third-round match against West Virginia. Auburn (14-4-3), which has lost to Florida State in three straight NCAA tournaments, went ahead on Sarah Steinmann's 30th-minute goal. Tollefson tallied 34 seconds into the second half from India Trotter's cross, then fed Gallegos' winner with after beating a defender and crossing from the end line.

West Virginia 3 Ohio State 0: Lisa Stoia scored a goal and assisted two others, setting a school record, as the Mountaineers (17-3-2) reached the Sweet 16 for the first time with a one-sided win at Morgantown, W.Va. Stoia finished Chrissie Abbott's pass with style in the 41st minute, touching the ball past two defenders before shooting, then found Laura Kane with a free kick for a 64th-minute header. Barden added an 86th-minute goal from another free kick by Stoia, who eclipsed Katie Barnes' career school assist record with her 31st. West Virginia will meet Florida State in a third-round game next weekend.

Virginia 0 Villanova 0: The visiting Wildcats (15-5-4) claimed their third shootout victory in four matches, eliminating seventh-seeded Virginia (12-5-4) on penalties following a scoreless draw. The Cavaliers needed penalty kicks to get past William & Mary in their NCAA opener. Lindsey Finnegan, Valerie Grow, Laura Johnson and Kelly Breslin converted from the spot in the 4-2 tiebreaker triumph, and Villanova goalkeeper Chrissy Dolan stopped PKs by Gillian Hatch and Katie Bunch. Virginia, who won only one of its last seven games, struggled to finish, with Jamie Fabrizio and Sarah Lane hitting posts and Kelly Hammond denied by a spectacular Dolan save. Villanova will meet Brigham Young next Friday or Saturday at a site to be determined.

Connecticut 3 Central Connecticut State 2: Kristen Graczyk's sixth career NCAA tournament goal, and second in as many games, lifted the Huskies (12-5-3) to a 3-2 overtime win over upstart Central Connecticut State (16-3-3) at Chestnut Hill, Mass. Graczyk tallied from Jessica Gjertsen's far-post cross in the 107th minute to become UConn's all-time top NCAA scorer. Nikki Cross and Kristi Lefebvre scored goals 88 seconds apart midway through the second half to turn a 1-0 deficit — from Laura Duncan's 23rd-minute goal — into a 2-1 lead. Jen Frisch forced overtime, pulling the Blue Devils even in the 83rd minute. Connecticut will face Michigan in a third-round game next weekend.

Michigan 1 Notre Dame 0: Stephanie Chavez scored early in the second half, and the Wolverines (11-7-6) bunkered to their second upset this season over the second-seeded Fighting Irish (20-3-1). Notre Dame, battling injuries that limited playing time for four of its best players — including defender Melissa Tancredi and forward Amy Warner — lost three of its last five games, including a 3-2 decision to Michigan on Oct. 29. Chavez, who netted the winner in the first meeting, tallied from a Robyn Vince corner kick in the 52nd minute. The Wolverines, who will meet Connecticut in a third round game, managed three shots, just one on frame.
