Alyssa Ramsey clinically finished a feed from Lindsay Tarpley in the 60th minute Friday afternoon and second-ranked North Carolina held on to beat No. 1 Stanford, 1-0, in the opener of St. Mary's Fall Classic in Moraga, Calif.

The Tar Heels (9-0-2), missing defender Cat Reddick, got strong performances off the bench from Kendall Fletcher and Anne Felts, and Leslie Gaston led a back-line effort that kept the Cardinal (8-1-0) off the scoreboard for the first time this season.

Stanford forward Marcia Wallis had three strong chances to score, firing just wide each time, and reserve forward Natalie Sanderson struck the crossbar with a looping shot late in the match.

It was a fairly even game, with Stanford owning better possession and creating better chances. The Tar Heels' physical play disrupted Stanford starting about midway through the first half, and their numerical superiority in midfield prevented Callie Withers from dominating play as she has done all season.

Ramsey scored her ninth goal of the season 15 minutes into the second half, taking a feed from Tarpley about 11 yards from the net, measuring her shot, then firing past goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart to the right side of the net.
