Katy Sturtz’s 38th-minute blast to the upper-left corner Saturday afternoon lifted Ohio Wesleyan past visiting Amherst, Mass., in the NCAA Division III women’s soccer championship. The Battling Bishops (22-1) claimed their first women’s soccer title and the university’s third in all sports by shutting down the Lord Jeffs’ attack with solid defense led by Akeya Terrell, the tournament’s defensive MVP. Sturtz, who finished her career with 112 goals (fourth on the all-time Division III list), trapped a feed from freshman defender Deborah Lochner with her chest, headed right, then turned and fired past Amherst goalkeeper Brooke Diamond. “I’m not saying it was luck, but I’ve done it before,” Sturtz said. “It felt right, and it went in.” “That was a world-class goal,” added Ohio Wesleyan coach Bob Barnes, “one of the best goals I’ve seen.” Ohio Wesleyan reached the final by edging Willamette, Ore., 2-1, on sophomore midfielder Liz Sheehan’s strike six minutes into overtime on Friday. Amherst (16-5-1) topped Wheaton, Ill., 1-0, in the other semifinal on a goal by Cathy Poor, the tournament’s top offensive player. In Division II play Saturday, five-time champion Franklin Pierce (22-0) and 2000 finalist Northern Kentucky (22-1) advanced to the final four with road victories. April Mann’s tally in the third minute of overtime gave Franklin Pierce a 1-0 victory at Lock Haven and sent the Ravens to their 10th successive final-four appearance. They’ll play the winner of Sunday’s Christian Brothers-North Florida clash in the semifinals. Betsy Moore scored two first-half goals in Northern Kentucky’s 2-0 victory at Truman State. The Norse, playing in their third straight final four, will face the winner of Saturday’s UC San Diego-Incarnate Word quarterfinal. UCSD beat Northern Kentucky in last year’s title game.
