Aly Wagner played roles in all three goals and Danielle Slaton had a goal and an assist as Santa Clara dominated visiting Virginia through the first hour Saturday, then held on for a 3-2 triumph in the rain a Buck Shaw Stadium to advance to the NCAA Division I women’s soccer semifinals. The second-seeded Broncos (21-2), who will face the winner of Sunday’s UCLA-Florida game in a semifinal Friday in Dallas, advance to their eighth final four and fifth in six years. They’ve yet to win a semifinal game. Santa Clara had the wind at their backs for the first half and a numerical advantage in central midfield most of the match, using them to forge a 3-0 lead by the 54th minute. Virginia (17-4-2) rallied with goals 77 seconds apart by Jessica Trainor and Lori Lindsey — the Cavaliers’ first two shots of the game — and continued to apply pressure the rest of the way. Slaton, a 2000 Olympian, volleyed home a rebound in the 21st minute after Leslie Osborne headed Wagner’s corner kick off the crossbar, then found Veronica Zepeda with a cross from the left wing to make it 2-0 in the 40th. Wagner, a dominant force in the middle, made it 3-0 nine minutes into the second half, finishing a Jessica Ballweg cross that was redirected by Kristi Candau. Lindsey, the Cavaliers’ playmaker, was overrun in midfield the first hour by Wagner, Devvyn Hawkins and Kerry Cathcart, but a switch from a 4-4-2 alignment to a 4-3-3 — and Santa Clara’s loss of the wind advantage — enabled Virginia to create more and better opportunities in the second half. Trainor scored in the 60th minute, a blast to the upper-left corner from 22 yards from a Lindsey cross. Lindsey, sent into the box on a nifty feed from Lindsay Gusick, tracked the ball down to the left of the goal after Broncos goalkeeper Erin Sharpe swiped it off her feet. Lindsey got the second a minute later with a 40-yard blast that cleared Sharpe and hit the underside of the crossbar before falling into the net. The Cavaliers managed just one shot after that, a twisting drive from Lindsey that sailed wide of the left post with 18 minutes to play. Santa Clara outshot Virginia, 13-0, over the first 59 and a half minutes, with the first half largely consisting of the Broncos gathering Cavalier clearances in midfield and racing again toward the Virginia box. Lindsey sought to free Gusick in the middle or Laura Gaworecki on the right flank, but first-hour Santa Clara goalkeeper Alyssa Sobolik cut off five through balls, and the Broncos defense — especially Slaton, Anna Kraus and left back Lana Bowen — allowed no penetration.
