No. 1 North Carolina and No. 2 UCLA romped into the NCAA Division I quarterfinals on Friday, each notching its third shutout of the tournament in third-round home victories.

The top-seeded Tar Heels (24-0-0) destroyed Purdue, 7-0, at Chapel Hill, N.C., giving them 20 goals in one-sided NCAA victories over High Point, UNC Charlotte and the Boilermakers (14-5-3).

Carolina will meet No. 3 Santa Clara or No. 4 Portland in a quarterfinal showdown next Friday night at Fetzer Field. The Broncos and Pilots renew their rivalry on Sunday in Portland, Ore.

UCLA (19-1-3), seeded fourth, carved out a 1-0 triumph over Kansas (18-4-1) in Westwood after scoring 2-0 victories over San Diego and Pepperdine. Penn State and Texas A&M tangle on Saturday, with the winner slated to meet the Bruins at Drake Stadium next Friday night.

Tennessee visits Florida and Brigham Young plays at Villanova in Saturday's third-round action. On Sunday, West Virginia is home against Florida State and Connecticut plays host to Michigan.

Division II and III quarterfinal games are slated for Saturday and Sunday.

In Friday's games:

North Carolina 7 Purdue 0: Anne Morrell came off the bench to score two goals and assist another, and Lindsay Tarpley set an NCAA assist record as the top-ranked Tar Heels routed the Boilermakers at Fetzer Field.

Catherine Reddick, Kacey White, Alyssa Ramsey and Maggie Tomecka also tallied for Carolina, which got characteristic balanced scoring as it turned a 2-0 advantage into 7-0 with a goal soon after halftime and four more in a little more than seven minutes midway through the second half.

Tarpley had assists on three goals, giving the sophomore forward eight in three NCAA games, bettering the single-tournament mark of six held by former Tar Heels Cindy Parlow and Jena Kluegel and former Connecticut star Jen Tietjen-Prozzo.

Lori Chalupny also added three assists, and O'Reilly, Ramsey and White also added assists to their goals. North Carolina, with 101 goals this season, passed the century mark for the first time since 1997.

Reddick headed home a Chalupny serve to give the Tar Heels a ninth-minute lead, and White made it 2-0 four minutes later after Tarpley put her into space from Chalupny's pass. The third, in the 51st minute, came from O'Reilly's 25-yard blast to the upper-right corner.

Morrell, who entered the game at halftime, scored in the 61st and 63rd minutes — a first-time finish from Tarpley and a rebound of a Tarpley shot — and Ramsey and Tomecka added goals just a few minutes later.

UCLA 1 Kansas 0: Sarah-Gayle Swanson scored in the 43rd minute and the dominant Bruins got past the 13th seed at Drake Stadium.

Jayhawks goalkeeper Meghan Miller was outstanding, making several superb stops and cutting off throughballs to prevent UCLA from capitalizing on a 16-2 shot advantage.

Kim Devine set up Swanson's 10th goal of the season with a nifty backheel from Whitney Jones' square pass. Swanson, from about seven yards, poked Devine's feed past Miller toward the right post.

Kansas' best opportunity arrived in the 72nd minute. Lauren Williams, on the left, slipped the ball past a defender and into the UCLA goalmouth. Caroline Smith couldn't get a proper touch on the ball, and goalkeeper Arianna Criscione scooped it up.
