Canadian national-teamer Christine Sinclair netted a hat trick in a seven-minute span midway through the first half and Portland romped into the NCAA Division I women's soccer quarterfinals for the seventh time in nine seasons Sunday with a 4-0 rout over visiting Richmond.
Sinclair tallied in the 21st, 23rd and 27th minutes — her 21st, 22nd and 23rd goals of the season — to lead the No. 7 Pilots to an elite-eight showdown at No. 1 Stanford next Saturday night.
Sinclair, a sophomore, also picked up an assist on Wanda Rozwadowska's goal early in the second half as Portland (17-4-2), which is 16-1-1 with Sinclair in the lineup, left the upstart Spiders (15-6-2) no chance.
''We?re playing at a different level right now, and I don?t know how much better I can ask the girls to play,'' said Portland coach Clive Charles. ''Christine is a world-class striker, and we?re a more complete team with her on the field.''
The Pilots dominated the match, taking 19 shots in the first half and outshooting Richmond, 34-6, for the game. Sinclair's strikes were her 10th, 11th and 12th goals in eight NCAA Tournament games, just three off Mia Hamm's record set over four seasons.
Sinclair finished a short pass back from the endline from Erin Misaki to give Portland the lead, then tallied off a through ball from Lindsey Huie two minutes later. Her third goal was one of the finest of the season for Portland: Rozwadowska?s endline cross was headed by Huie back across the box to Sinclair, who finished past a scrambling Richmond defense.
She might have scored another three if not for sensational saves by Richmond goalkeeper Megan Cox.
Rozwadowska, also Canadian, tallied from Sinclair's pass in the 52nd minute.
They?re a wonderful team,'' Richmond coach Peter Albright said. ''I?m so impressed with Portland?s speed of play. They?re totally unselfish, and we were completely outclassed today.''
In other third-round games:
Penn State 3 Virginia 0: Joanna Lohman set up the first of two Heidi Drummond goals and added one of her own seven minutes later as the No. 13 Nittany Lions (18-3-1) romped into a quarterfinal matchup next Saturday afternoon at Connecticut.
Drummond netted her 13th and 14th goals of the season for Penn State, which earned a quarterfinal berth for the fifth successive year. Only once, in 1999, did the Nittany Lions advance to the final four.
Drummond scored from a Lohman pass in the 21st minute, and Lohman added to it in the 28th on a rebound from a corner kick. Drummond scored the third in the 72nd minute from a feed by Stephanie Smith, who had rebounded her own shot off a post.
''It was a tough game against a strong team,'' said Virginia coach Steve Swanson, whose team, ranked 24th, finished 13-7-2. ''In these type of games, the first goal is so critical. They got that first goal and then did a good job of preventing us from moving the ball to generate offense.''
Connecticut 1 Florida State 0: The No. 6 Huskies (21-2-1) made freshman Brittany Barakat's goal, scored 70 seconds into the match, stand up to earn a quarterfinal assignment next weekend against Penn State.
Barakat chipped Kerry York from the right after Jennifer Sullivan's long ball up the flank drew the Seminoles' goalkeeper well off her line.
Connecticut netminder Maria Yatrakis made critical saves on Cindy Schofield and Camee Bybee in the final 10 minutes to preserve the Huskies' 10th one-goal victory of the season.
Florida State's campaign closes at 13-7-3.
