Top-ranked North Carolina was missing its top two players, but no matter. The Tar Heels, with winger Jena Kluegel and defender Catherine Reddick off on U.S. national team duty, romped past Charlotte and No. 10 Penn State to capture the Carolina Classic title. Forward Susan Bush, who missed most of last season with an ACL tear, sustained a knee injury in the first game. No. 2 UCLA also is on a roll, routing Denver to win Cal State Fullerton’s tournament, then shutting out Louisville and Syracuse at Illinois’ Orange & Blue Classic. No. 3 Portland and sixth-ranked Santa Clara gave the West Coast Conference four victories over two strong Atlantic Coast Conference programs, both dumping No. 12 Florida State and No. 20 Wake Forest at the Demon Deacons’ tournament. No. 11 California and No. 14 Stanford nearly fared as well on their trek through Texas. Stanford beat Texas and Texas A&M, but the Bears couldn’t overcome A&M after toppling the Longhorns. The matches against A&M were played at Southwest Texas State because the field at College Station remains unplayable after heavy rains. No. 7 Notre Dame, coming off an impressive performance at its tournament a week earlier, struggled to beat Indiana in overtime, then saw its 29-game home winning streak snapped in a 2-2 tie with Wisconsin. Miami (Fla.) improved to 5-0 with a 1-0 victory over No. 16 Florida, which was missing forward Abby Wambach (with the national team). 9/3 RANKING … TEAM (CURRENT RECORD) … PRESEASON RANKING 1.
