WAVES ROLL PILOTS: Freshman Megan Woods scored two second-half goals as visiting Pepperdine, ranked 18th, upset No. 2 Portland, 2-0, on Sunday, forcing a logjam behind first-place Santa Clara in the West Coast Conference.
The No. 5 Broncos are on top with a 3-0 record after romping past St. Mary's and San Francisco, the final matches playmaker Aly Wagner — off to join the U.S. women's team for the CONCACAF Gold Cup — will play during the regular season.
Pepperdine, Portland, St. Mary's and Loyola Marymount are 2-1. The WCC does not hold a conference tournament; the regular-season champion gets the automatic berth to the NCAA tournament.
CHAMPS, AGAIN: Heidi Drummond netted gamewinners against Minnesota and Wisconsin as No. 10 Penn State clinched a share of its fifth successive Big Ten championship. The Nittany Lions, who hold a one-game advantage on Michigan, can claim the title outright with a win or tie Friday against Ohio State.
No. 24 Purdue, which is third, topped Iowa in its only game this week. Friday's Big Ten encounter at Illinois was suspended by lightning 2:40 into the second half with the score tied, 1-1. It will be rescheduled in its entirety.
NO. 1 WITH A BULLET: Top-ranked Stanford's success this season has been built on defense, and the Cardinal notched its third and fourth shutouts on its Pacific-10 Conference campaign with home wins over Oregon and Oregon State. No. 7 California also swept the Oregon schools, and No. 6 UCLA and No. 12 USC pulled off sweeps of No. 17 Arizona State and Arizona on the road.
No. 20 Washington joins Stanford as the last unbeaten (in conference) Pac-10 schools, but the Huskies had to rally to tie host Washington State.
WOLFPACK FALTERS: No. 23 North Carolina State, which shocked then-No. 1 North Carolina a little more than a week ago, stumbled badly in its next two games, falling to Duke, 3-0, and Florida State, 5-1, in Atlantic Coast Conference play.
The Tar Heels, now No. 3, buried Florida State and edged Virginia. No. 11 Wake Forest lost to No. 16 Clemson, which then lost to Maryland.
ELSEWHERE: No. 4 Texas and No. 8 Texas A&M are unbeaten in the Big 12 after both shutout Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. The Longhorns hold a two-point lead on the Aggies in the standings.
No. 9 West Virginia — which already has clinched the Big East's Mid-Atlantic Division crown — notched its fifth successive shutout, beating Providence. No. 15 Connecticut — which would claim the Northeast Division title with a win Wednesday at Providence — topped Seton Hall. No. 14 Villanova was held to a 1-1 tie by visiting St. John's.
No. 13 Tennessee stumbled on the road, dropping an SEC decision to Florida and tying South Carolina. No. 25 Cal State Fullerton lost its first Big West clash, to archrival Long Beach State, then bounced back to crush Orange County rival UC Irvine.
No. 20 Princeton, No. 21 Charlotte and Navy remained unbeaten, the only Division I squads without a loss. The Tigers (12-0-0) edged Brown in an Ivy League clash; the 49ers (13-0-1) topped East Carolina and Duke; and the Midshipmen (12-0-4) posted Patriot League wins over Lafayette and Delaware.
Denver continued to roll through its Sun Belt schedule, shutting out South Alabama and La.-Lafayette on the road.
