WAVES REDUX: No. 12 Pepperdine followed its upset last week at Portland with a 1-0 triumph Friday over No. 4 Santa Clara. Janelle Hilseth scored the goal for the Waves, who share the West Coast Conference lead with the Broncos and the No. 6 Pilots.
Santa Clara was without star playmaker Aly Wagner, who scored the first goal in the U.S. women's national team's 3-0 victory over Mexico in its CONCACAF Gold Cup opener Sunday at the Rose Bowl. Wagner tried to get to Malibu to watch Friday's clash, but she got caught in L.A. traffic.
U.S. coach April Heinrichs will permit Wagner to play in the Broncos' showdown Sunday at Portland, which bounced back from its loss to the Waves with wins at San Francisco and St. Mary's.
UNC DRAWN: Second-ranked North Carolina was without star defender Cat Reddick — the U.S. women's left back vs. Mexico — but defense wasn't a problem for the Tar Heels against Duke. They were unable to get the ball past Icelandic national team goalkeeper Thora Helgadottir, who made nine saves in a scoreless tie,
The Atlantic Coast Conference surely is the most balanced, and perhaps the best, conference in Division I soccer. Every squad except North Carolina has lost at least two conference matches, and the Tar Heels have a loss and a tie.
No. 15 Wake Forest lost to resurgent Virginia, which also knocked off Duke. No. 16 Maryland fell to Florida State. No. 17 Clemson topped North Carolina State.
BIG 12 SHOWDOWN: No. 3 Texas and No. 8 Texas A&M both handled Kansas and Missouri last week to set up Friday's showdown for the Big 12 Conference regular-season title in College Station. The Longhorns, who won their first Big 12 regular-season crown last season, are 9-0-0 and will clinch with a tie against the 8-0-1 Aggies, the defending Big 12 tourney champs.
No. 24 Nebraska stumbled again, losing for the first time to Oklahoma State. The Cornhuskers followed with a win over Oklahoma.
NO. 1 ROLLS ON: Top-ranked Stanford improved to 15-1-0 with 1-0 wins at No. 25 Washington and Washington State. Marcie Ward scored against the Huskies and had an assist on Jenny Farenbaugh's strike vs. WSU.
No. 7 California didn't fare so well on the trek north. The Bears lost to both Washington clubs.
Crystal James and Stacy Lindstrom tallied as No. 5 UCLA topped No. 11 USC, 2-0, in the battle of L.A., and No. 20 Arizona State went 2-0 in Oregon.
ONE DOWN, TWO LEFT: No. 19 Princeton, the last perfect team in Division I, dropped its first match on Saturday, losing a 1-0 decision to visiting Harvard. That leaves No. 14 Charlotte (14-0-2) — which played Conference USA power Cincinnati to a 0-0 draw and pummeled Louisville — and unranked Navy (13-0-4) as the only unbeaten sides.
BIG EAST TOURNEY: The Big East Conference Tournament field was completed Friday with St. John's overtime win against Virginia Tech. The Red Storm will play at No. 9 West Virginia, the Mid-Atlantic Division champion, on Sunday.
No. 18 Villanova also will play on Sunday, at home against Boston College. Saturday's quarterfinals will pit No. 13 Connecticut, the Northeast Division titlist, against visiting Georgetown and Miami against visiting Rutgers.
UConn and Georgetown were also supposed to play last week in Washington, but the match was canceled because of the fear of sniper shootings. Police arrested one man and one teen-ager in the case the day before the Huskies and Hoyas were to play.
WRAPUP: No. 10 Penn State and No. 23 Purdue wrapped up their Big Ten slates with victories. The Nittany Lions are favored to add the conference tournament championship to their regular-season title next week.
No. 21 Tennessee grabbed the top spot in the Southeastern Conference's Eastern Division with wins at Mississippi State and Ole Miss, and Auburn clinched the Western Division crown.
No. 22 Denver completed a perfect run through the Sun Belt Conference by burying visiting Florida International.
