FIRST TIME: North Carolina State beat No. 1 North Carolina for the first time on Thursday, pulling out a 2-1 triumph as Adrienne Barnes and Lindsey Underwood scored goals and goalkeeper Gretchen Lear, facing 45 shots, tied an Atlantic Coast Conference record with 19 saves.

The Wolfpack had lost 30 games and tied twice — both 14 years ago — in previous meetings with North Carolina, and its victory put it in the driver's seat in the ACC race. N.C. State is 2-0-1 with a victory over Maryland and tie with No. 10 Wake Forest.

The Tar Heels bounced back to beat No. 19 Clemson in overtime.

No. 17 Florida State was tied by Duke and lost to Wake Forest, which earlier dropped a 2-0 non-conference decision to No. 13 Tennessee. In the other ACC clash, Maryland beat Virginia, 2-0.

In the SEC, Tennessee followed its win vs. Wake with a 1-0 loss to Vanderbilt. The Lady Vols bounced back to beat Kentucky.

STANFORD ROLLS: No. 2 Stanford opened its Pacific-10 Conference slate with shutout wins over No. 15 USC and No. 5 UCLA in Los Angeles. Natalie Sanderson and Marcie Ward tallied in Friday's win over the Women of Troy; Callie Withers scored the lone goal against the Bruins.

No. 7 California didn't fare so well, dropping shutout decisions to UCLA and USC.

No. 16 Arizona State, routing Arizona, and No. 20 Washington, with wins at Oregon and Oregon State, had fine starts to their Pac-10 campaigns.

AND THEN THERE WERE THREE: North Carolina wasn't the only unbeaten team to lose this week. No. 12 Pepperdine and unranked UTEP also dropped matches.

The Waves fell to nearby Loyola Marymount, 1-0, on a Kelly Lewandowski goal in their West Coast Conference opener. UTEP was upset, 2-0, in a WAC clash at Fresno State.

No. 22 Princeton, Charlotte and Navy are the final Division I teams without a defeat.

No. 3 Portland and No. 8 Santa Clara began their WCC schedules on winning notes. The Pilots routed Gonzaga, 4-1, as Christine Sinclair scored three goals. Santa Clara romped, 3-0, over San Diego as Leslie Osborne tallied twice.

IRISH FIGHT BACK: Notre Dame, unaccustomed to being unranked, bounced back from losses last week to West Virginia and Tuesday to Purdue, getting goals Sunday from Katie Thorlakson, Randi Scheller and Melissa Tancredi to upset No. 9 Connecticut, 3-1, in Big East play.

The other ranked Big East squads — No. 11 West Virginia and No. 21 Villanova — both notched a pair of shutouts.

FIT TO BE TIED: Baylor, which last week knocked off Kansas, held No. 6 Texas A&M to a 1-1 tie on Friday, but couldn't solve Texas on Sunday, falling, 3-1. The Longhorns are on target for a second successive Big 12 crown.

In the Big Ten, No. 24 Purdue followed its win over Notre Dame with a 1-0 triumph over No. 19 Michigan, then was upset by visiting Michigan State. Penn State, routed last week by Michigan, was impressive in wins over Maryland, Illinois and Iowa.

TWO-AND-OH: No. 22 Princeton, No. 23 Denver, No. 25 Cal State Fullerton continued on their paths to conference crowns. The Tigers — the final unbeaten and untied team — dominated Penn in an Ivy League showdown.

Denver, virtually without competition in the Sun Belt, buried Middle Tennessee State and Western Kentucky. Fullerton topped Idaho and Utah State; its primary Big West challenges should come from Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara.
