Adrienne Dillard headed home a corner kick in the 62nd minute Friday night and Texas A&M advanced to the NCAA Division I women’s soccer quarterfinals for the first time in its program’s nine-year history with a 1-0 victory over fifth-seeded Stanford at the Cardinal’s Maloney Field. Dillard’s third goal of the season came off an Amber Childers’ corner kick, and goalkeeper Esther Thompson made four saves — one on a Marcie Ward breakaway — as A&M (17-3-1) notched its ninth shutout in 14 games and extended its winning streak to 11 games. The fifth-ranked Aggies advance to play next weekend against the winner of Saturday’s Portland-Nebraska clash. “This was a huge win for our program,” A&M coach G. Guerrieri said. “We have been to the Sweet 16 four times, and we finally found a way to break into the final eight.” Ninth-ranked Stanford (15-4-2) limited A&M’s chances, with a defense led by Amy Sauer and Ally Marquand holding senior star Nicky Thrasher to one shot and freshman sensation Linsey Johnson without a shot. The Cardinal twice came close to equalizing within 10 minutes after Dillard’s goal, but Natalie Sanderson hit the crossbar and Thompson halted Ward’s 1-on-1 bid. The third round continues with six games Saturday and another on Sunday. NCAA DIVISION I WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIPS THIRD ROUND Friday’s results Stanford 0 Texas A&M 1. Goal: Dillard (Childers) 62.
