Tenth-ranked Texas and No. 14 West Virginia were the biggest upset victims Friday night during the opening round of the NCAA Division I women’s soccer championships. SMU and Miami (Ohio) pulled off the stunners on a day that included PK magic by Duke’s Thora Helgadottir, Abby Wambach’s 27th and 28th goals for Florida, comebacks by Georgia and Cincinnati, and two WCC victories in three Pacific-10 showdowns. WAC champion Southern Methodist (16-3) got two goals from Sarah Harvey to stun the Longhorns, 2-1, at College Station, Texas. The senior forward headed home Lorrie Tipton’s cross in the fourth minute and finished a breakaway in the 78th for the Lady Mustangs, who will take on host Texas A&M in a second-round game Sunday. Texas (14-6), which won the Big 12 Conference regular-season title and fell to A&M in the conference tournament final, got its goal in the 79th on a Lauren Field free kick. Longhorn goalkeeper Shay Wilkerson, brought on when freshman starter Alex Gagarin was injured, made eight saves, one on a penalty kick. West Virginia (15-5-1) fell at home to Mid-American Tournament titlist Miami (Ohio). Danielle Berkemeier, taken down from behind, converted a penalty kick in the 26th minute for the game’s lone goal. It was her sixth goal in the past four matches. Goalkeeper Katie Karlander made eight saves for the RedHawks (15-6-1), who will take on Atlantic-10 titlist Dayton on Sunday.
