Three No. 1 seeds, including previously unbeaten Charlotte, were among favorites who stumbled Thursday as Conference Tournament Week in college women's soccer near full stride with 13 conferences in action.

Penn State and Michigan, the top two seeds in the Big Ten Conference women's soccer tournament, were eliminated in opening-round play Thursday at Lansing, Mich.

The 10th-ranked Nittany Lions fell as Illinois rallied from a three-goal deficit for a 4-3 quarterfinal victory. No. 14 Charlotte, Conference USA's No. 1 seed, lost at home to Marquette, 2-1, in the semifinals. Auburn, the top seed in the Southeastern Conference, lost, 1-0, to LSU in a quarterfinal at Oxford, Miss.

The Illini scored four goals in 18 minutes, the first two by Andrea Ridgeway, the third by Tiffani Walker and the 80th-minute winner by Kelly Campbell, to end Penn State's four-year reign. Tara Hurless was credited with assists on all four goals.

Second-seeded Michigan fell to Ohio State on penalty kicks after a 1-1 draw. Heather Miller gave the Buckeyes a 32nd-minute lead, but Hermann Award finalist Abby Crumpton pulled Michigan even just before halftime. Ohio State won the shootout, 3-2.

Friday's semifinals pair Illinois with Wisconsin and Ohio State with third-seeded Purdue, the highest remaining seed.

Charlotte dropped to 16-1-2 as Kate Gordon and Ashley Spakowitz scored second half goals to rally fifth-seeded Marquette into the Conference USA final. The 49ers' loss left Navy (16-0-4) the lone unbeaten team in Division I; the Midshipmen face American in a Patriot League semifinal Friday at West Point, N.Y.

Marquette, a traditional Conference USA power who slipped to the No. 5 seed this season, will face second-seeded Cincinnati — the conference's other perennial — in Saturday's title game. The Bearcats scored on two corner kicks — with Tasha Wagner finishing the first and serving Amy Mink's 88th-minute winner — to beat East Carolina, 2-1.

Mandy Heintz's 86th-minute goal carried LSU past Auburn and into a semifinal matchup with six-time defending SEC tournament champion Florida.
