Iris Mora set a school season record for assists Sunday as UCLA beat archrival USC to claim the Pacific 10 Conference title and a berth in the NCAA women's soccer tournament.

The fourth-ranked Bruins, who clinched a tie for the Pac-10 crown with two games remaining, are the second squad to qualify for the 64-team NCAA championships, joining Ivy League champion Dartmouth. Pairings will be announced Nov. 10.

UCLA's 2-0 triumph highlighted a big day in college women's soccer in which Santa Clara topped Portland in a West Coast Conference showdown, Villanova upset No. 17 Connecticut in the Big East Conference quarterfinals, Dayton won the Atlantic-10 Conference championship, and American claimed a share of the Patriot League title.

Mora, a Mexican international, set up Lindsay Greco's goal — her UCLA-record 12th assist of the year — and scored the second. Arizona State can catch the Bruins in the standings, but UCLA has the edge in the tiebreaker.

In a rematch of last year's NCAA Division I final, Santa Clara overcame reigning champion Portland, 2-1, on Kristi Candau's overtime strike. The result gave the Broncos a one-point lead on the Pilots with one match remaining.

The Pac-10, WCC and Ivy League are the only conferences that determine automatic NCAA qualifiers through regular-season play.

Patricia Misciagna finished a rebound in the 39th minute and Villanova's defense did the rest as the Wildcats stunned host Connecticut, 1-0, in the Big East quarterfinals.

Villanova's first victory over the Huskies in 16 meetings dating to 1983 propelled it to a semifinal meeting against second-ranked Notre Dame on Friday at Piscataway, N.J. The Fighting Irish survived a scare from Miami, Fla., winning, 2-1, on Amanda Guertin's overtime goal.

Connecticut was missing Nikki Cross and Meghan Schnur with injuries.

No. 7 West Virginia and Boston College both won home games to advance to Friday's other Big East semifinal match at Rutgers. The Mountaineers beat St. John's, 2-1, as Lisa Stoia scored one goal and assisted the other; BC topped Rutgers, 2-1, on Beth Totman's 87th-minute goal.

In the Missouri Valley Conference quarterfinals, Regina Moench's overtime goal lifted visiting Creighton past Northern Iowa, 2-1, and Southwest Missouri State beat visiting Drury, 2-1, as Chelsea Anderson and Angela Parsons scored second-half goals. The other 25 conference tournaments kick off next week.

Dayton claimed the Atlantic-10 Conference title although it was held to a 1-1 draw at St. Bonaventure. Richmond, which entered the final weekend on top of the standings, fell, 3-2, in overtime to Fordham, its second successive loss. A victory would have given the Spiders a share of the title.

American overcame Army, 2-1, on German midfielder Simone Konig's overtime goal to share the Patriot League title with Navy and will play host to the conference's postseason tournament next weekend.

Loyola, Md., won the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference outright by beating Niagara, 2-1. The Greyhounds clinched a share of the title on Friday but would have shared it with Niagara had they lost.
