Utah stunned No. 17 Brigham Young in overtime on Thursday to set up a rematch with No. 7 Portland as the NCAA women's college soccer tournament kicked off in Provo, Utah.
Megan Maxwell's 25-yard blast from a short feed on free kick ended the suspense nine minutes into the extra period, sending the Utes (13-3-3) to a 3-2 victory that snapped the host Cougars' 13-game winning streak.
Portland (15-4-2) advanced with a 3-0 triumph over Idaho State as Christine Sinclair, just returned from helping Canada secure a World Cup berth at the CONCACAF Women's Gold Cup, tallied twice.
BYU (16-6-0), which beat Utah, 2-1, in a Nov. 2 Mountain West Conference game, forced overtime when MWC Player of the Year Jeni Viernes tallied with 12 seconds remaining in regulation.
''This is the best game I've been involved in in five years,'' said first-year Utah coach Rich Manning, who was associate head coach at NCAA champion Santa Clara before arriving in Salt Lake City. ''BYU showed a lot of character. You have to give credit to them for tying it up.''
BYU twice answered Ute goals. Aleisha Cramer Rose evened things just before halftime, after Missy Dennis' 32nd-minute strike; Katie Tate sent Utah ahead again from a Dennis feed in the 72nd minute.
Shauna Gurr-Bingham took sole possession of Utah's career assists record, notching her 22nd on Dennis' goal, but she left soon after with a twisted knee and did not return.
Sinclair, a Golden Boot winner at the Gold Cup, netted her 17th and 18th goals of the season and midfielder Erin Misaki added a goal and assist in Portland's victory. The Pilots had beaten Idaho State, 5-0, in an NCAA first-round game in 2001.
The Pilots dominated Idaho State (13-7-1), grabbing a two-goal advantage by the 13th minute and limiting the Bengals to two shots.
''We're more goal-dangerous with Christine in our lineup, and this result proves that,'' said Portland coach Clive Charles, who improved to 20-9 in NCAA Tournament matches. ''Having a striker of her caliber on the field also opens up the field, and it was nice to have Erin Misaki involved in our scoring.''
Sinclair was with the Canadian under-19 team at the FIFA World Championship when Utah upset the Pilots, 2-0, Sept. 1 in Salt Lake City. Gurr-Bingham and Julie Herdic scored the goals.
