If Colombia put forth a formal bid to host the 2014 World Cup, then the South American soccer confederation (CSF) didn’t know anything about it. CSF spokesman Nestor Benitez said his organization still considered the Brazil confederation the only candidate to host the tournament. “Brazil is unquestionably the only candidate for the 2014 World Cup,” Benitez told Reuters. On Saturday, Colombia President Alvaro Uribe said during a speech that he wanted Colombia to stage the tournament in the future, but he gave no indication when that would be. Colombia had been awarded the 1986 finals but pulled out less than four years prior due to financial troubles. Instead, Mexico stepped in to host the competition for the second time in 16 years. Under a new rotation system, FIFA said the competition should be staged in South America in 2014. In 2003, the 10 members of the CSF voted to back Brazil as their only candidate for the 2014 tournament. CSF spokesman Benitez said an official bid from Colombia would have to come through the Colombian federation, which refused to comment on Uribe’s speech. FIFA will announce the host nation for the 2014 finals in the summer or autumn of 2008.
