Bernardo Fallas of the Houston Chronicle makes the case for hometown hero Dwayne De Rosario to win Major League Soccer’s Most Valuable Player award. Fallas calls De Rosario “the only player in Major League Soccer capable of delivering a Ronaldinho-like impact.” Christian Gomez of D.C. United might beg to differ, but De Rosario is certainly capable of leaving fans on both sides speechless. The Canadian finished the regular season as Houston’s top scorer, and the winner of the club’s Most Valuable Player Award. De Rosario was also a starter in the MLS All-Star game, in which he scored the only goal of the game as MLS beat English champion Chelsea 1-0. “I’m very thankful that I helped contribute to the team’s success this year,” De Rosario said. “I appreciate everyone who voted for me and respects what I do on the field.” Gomez is still considered the favorite for the award, which will be announced today on ESPNews at 4:30 EST (about the time most of you will read this). Gomez and D.C. United were dumped out of MLS Cup last week by New England. “Winning an MVP and winning the final – that would be beautiful,” De Rosario said. Is he good enough to win the award? He thinks so. “I thought I deserved it last year, but I think I deserve it this year, too,” De Rosario said. But if he doesn’t, there’s always the championship game on Sunday.
