Manchester United forward and World Player of the Year Cristiano Ronaldo has agreed a deal with Real Madrid President Ramon Calderon to join the Spanish champion in the summer, according to a “respected Spanish journalist.”

Both Guillem Balague, writing on his website, and Spanish newspaper AS claim Ronaldo has agreed in principle to go to Madrid in the summer, and may request a transfer from United. Other media reports have said the eventual transfer fee could rise to as high as $153 million, with Ronaldo to pocket annual wages of $16 million, around twice his current earnings.

There’s one small problem, though — Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson. Balague admits that in spite of the alleged agreement, Ferguson’s refusal “to sell his best player remains a significant obstacle to the transfer to Madrid going ahead. And, if United refuse to sell, then the secret agreement with Calderon remains nothing more than that.”
