The United States fell to Turkey, 2-1, Thursday night in St. Etienne, France, in the opening Group B game at the Confederations Cup.
The Americans took a 1-0 lead very much against the run of play in the 36th minute when DaMarcus Beasley headed home Landon Donovan's header.
The turning point of the game came seconds later when Turkey was awarded a penalty kick after captain Frankie Hejduk was ruled to have fouled Tuncay Sanli in the box. Okan Yilmaz converted the penalty.
The Turks, who fielded only three players with more than four caps, took the lead in the 70th minute on Tuncay's goal.
The Americans then created a number of chances — notably a shot cleared off the line by a defender — but couldn't get the equalizer.
The USA-Turkey game will be shown on Galavision later today: 7 pm ET/4 pm PT (DISH & Direct TV), 7 pm ET/PT (cable).
The United States faces Brazil Saturday in Lyon.
