USA vs. TURKEY (June 19 in St. Etienne)
The United States faces Turkey, third at the 2002 World Cup, in the opening Group B game.
U.S. coach Bruce Arena is expected to adopt the same formula that worked four years ago at the 1999 Confederations Cup in Mexico, where he alternated lineups for the short tournament.
Turkey is sending its ''A'' team that recently won two important Euro 2004 qualifiers. Coach Senol Gunes' big challenge is fielding an attack. Turkey has been engaged in a tug of war with Spanish club Real Sociedad over the release of star Nihat Kahveci. Key for Turkey will midfielder Yildiray Basturk, considered Turkey's best playmaker but often criticized for his performances on the national team.
Turkey will have the crowd behind it in St. Etienne. The Turks had to move their practice to a secret location on Tuesday after Turkish fans mobbed the players on Monday and scuffled with local police.
In their only previous meeting, the Americans and Turks played to a 1-1 tie in 1991 in Istanbul.
Kickoff: 10 a.m. ET.
TV: Galavision (delay), 7 pm ET (DISH & Direct TV), 7 pm ET/PT (cable).
Referee: Jorge Larrionda (Uruguay).
