Men’s teams from the Big Ten got off to the best start of teams from any conference on the Labor Day weekend that marked the start of the 2008 season.

Perhaps the biggest surprise was last year’s national runner-up Ohio State, which was hit hard by graduation losses and struggled in preseason.

The Buckeyes won the Bert and Iris Wolstein Classic on Sunday when sophomore Sam Scales’ goal with 64 seconds left in regulation tied the game at 1-1 and freshman Dave Tiemstra’s rebound goal in double-overtime gave them a 2-1 win over UCF.

Ohio State was one of four Big Tens to begin 2-0-0. Indiana opened 1-0-0, settling for a 0-0 tie with Akron in its second game.

Michigan State and Penn State were the only Big Ten teams to lose. Both lost their second games after opening with wins.
