Costa Rica, the next U.S. opponent in World Cup qualifying, is looking for a new coach after the resignation of Argentine Horacio Cordero. The Ticos, considered one of the favorites to qualify for the ’98 World Cup, lost to Canada 1-0 and tied El Salvador 0-0 at home in their last two games. They face the U.S. Sept. 7 in Portland, Ore. Cordero coached Guatemala in World Cup qualifying last fall and replaced Badu Vieira as Costa Rican coach this winter after Vieira had a falling out with Costa Rican officials. Coredro’s resignation came Aug. 13 following a meeting of the Costa Rica federation’s technical committee. Vieira is one of the candidates to replace Cordero. Also mentioned were Marvin Rodriguez, who coached Costa Rica in its campaign to qualify for the ’90 World Cup, Juan Luis Hernandez and Alexandre Guimaraes. Costa Rica has a history of making coaching changes. It went through three coaches en route to reaching Italia ’90, where it turned to a fourth, Bora Milutinovic, to lead it to the round of 16 after upsetting Scotland and Sweden.
