In the Jan. 6 playoff between Guatemala and Costa Rica, who were tied for second place in the CONCACAF semifinal round group that the USA won, Costa Rica prevailed, 5-2, in Miami. Costa Rica thus joins the USA, which lost to and tied Costa Rica in the semifinal round, Mexico, Jamaica, Honduras and Trinidad & Tobago in the hexagonal round. The top three finishers of that home-and-away round robin qualify for the 2002 World Cup. In the semifinal round last year, Costa Rica beat Guatemala 2-1 at home and lost by the same score in Guatemala. The teams finished tied on points, goal difference and goal scored. But in the Orange Bowl playoff, there was no question of Costa Rica’s superiority.
