Brazil’s Cruzeiro ground out a scoreless draw at Estudiantes in the first leg of the final in the Argentine city of La Plata on Wednesday. Brazil national team goalkeeper Fabio made five brilliant saves for the visitors, including two against dangerous strikes from Juan Sebastian Veron.

“We had the best chances… but their goalkeeper had his night,” Veron told Fox Sports. Man of the match. Fabio, Cruzeiro’s captain, said: “It’s a good result, the team played well, it was very difficult. We even had chances to score.” Late in the second half Cruzeiro created two gilt-edged chances, both from left crosses, but couldn’t convert.

Estudiantes didn’t concede a goal in any of its home matches in the tournament. And despite the disappointing draw, the team still likes its chances to snatching an upset in the second leg in Belo Horizonte next Wednesday.
