The 1998 D3 Pro League national championship weekend will be held Sept. 12-13 at Del Valle Stadium in Austin, Texas. The Austin Lone Stars, Chicago Stingers, New Hampshire Phantoms and Orlando Breakers have advanced to the championship weekend with quarterfinal victories the weekend of Aug. 29. The Lone Stars’ Gabe Jones knocked home a Bryan Pearce corner kick in the 65th minute for the only goal in a 1-0 win at Arizona in the quarterfinals. Chicago forward Joe Carver was the hero as the Stingers downed Delaware by a similar score, improving the team’s record at Forest View Park (“The Hive”) in Arlington Heights to 11-0 for the year. Joel Ogbunamiri scored on a penalty kick and Ron Murphy added a pair of assists in New Hampshire’s 3-0 win over Central Jersey, ending the Riptide’s cinderella run through the playoffs. In the other quarterfinal, Orlando rallied for a dramatic overtime win over host Charlotte. Jamie Wellington’s second goal had put the Eagles in front 2-1, but the Breakers tied the match in the 62nd minute and got a golden goal from substitute Matthew Froehle in the second minute of overtime for the victory. In the Sept. 12 semifinals, Chicago will face Orlando at 5:30 p.m. (CT) and Austin will meet New Hampshire at 8:00 p.m. The third-place match and championship match will be played on Sept. 13 at 4:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., respectively.
