The Chicago Stingers were crowned D3 champions Sept. 13 after defeating the New Hampshire Phantoms 3-2 in overtime. The Stingers rallied from an early 2-0 deficit, equalizing through substitute Chuck Codd in the 71st minute and winning in the fourth extra minute when Matt Hamnett scored off an assist from tournament MVP Joe Carver. The Phantoms had taken the lead in the second minute, when midfielder Marcelo Tapia knocked home a loose ball from eight yards out. Ron Murphy added a second eight minutes later. But in the 41st minute, the Phantoms lost all-tournament goalkeeper Jeremy Bailey to a collision with Carver. Backup Graham Nelson surrendered all three Chicago goals. Chicago reached the final by defeating the Orlando Nighthawks 2-0. The Stingers had a man advantage after Orlando forward Frank Bresk was ejected in the ninth minute, but were unable to break down the Nighthawk defense until Mike Richardson’s 70th-minute strike. The Phantoms defeated the host Austin Lone Stars 3-2 in overtime in an ill-tempered match that featured eight cautions and three ejections. Austin’s Kerwin Johnson forced overtime with a 79th-minute equalizer, but Jamie Williams scored in the tenth minute of overtime to give New Hampshire the victory. Orlando got a late tally from Jose DeOlivera (his second of the match) to down Austin 3-2 for third place.
