D.C. United traded veteran central defender Carlos Llamosa to the Miami Fusion for defender/midfielder Brian Kamler and the No. 4 pick in the first round of Monday’s MLS SuperDraft. Llamosa was United’s first round draft pick in the 1997 supplemental draft. He has earned 16 caps for the United States. Kamler is no stranger to United. Originally acquired by United in the sixth round of the 1996 draft, Kamler was traded to Miami July 19, 1999, for John Maessner and future considerations. Kamler was a part of United clubs that won the ’96 and ’97 MLS Cup, the 1996 U.S. Open Cup, the 1998 CONCACAF Champions Cup and the 1998 Interamerican Cup. The versatile left-sided player is comfortable either in the midfield, or on defense as a left or central back. “It will be very difficult to see Carlos Llamosa in another team’s uniform, particularly one in our division,” said Kevin Payne, D.C. United President & General Manager. “Carlos continues to be among the elite defenders in the league, but this was a move we felt we had to make to address problems regarding our salary structure this year and in the future.” áááááá “We are happy to have Brian Kamler back with United,” said Payne. “He is a versatile player who will help us in a number of positions. He will provide us with either a solid starter or high quality depth.” Prior to the trade United did not have a pick until the third round of the draft. “We hope to choose a player with the No. 4 pick who will help us for a number of years to come,” said Payne.
