Prior to yesterday’s featured clash in Houston between FC Barcelona of Spain and Club America of Mexico, Cheslea-beater Dwayne De Rosario and the Houston Dynamo took on the LA Galaxy in front of a near sold-out home crowd. De Rosario, whose 23-yarder was enough to see the MLS All-Stars beat Chelsea in Chicago last weekend, has emerged as one of the league’s most memorable stars as MLS teams continue to fare well against Europe’s top clubs, which are touring the States as part of their preseason. In MLS, De Rosario scores stunning goals like the one against Chelsea by the boat-load, having won the league’s Goal of the Year competition now for two years running. Unfortunately, we won’t be seeing him line-up for the red, white and blue anytime soon: Dwayne’s a Canadian. He was born in a Toronto suburb, which means the baking heat in Houston is sometimes too much for him. “Man it’s too hot to play,” De Rosario told the New York Times as he drove to training early yesterday. He and others like D.C. United’s Freddy Adu are the MLS stars who stand to gain valuable exposure from good performances against teams like Chelsea and Real Madrid. This is exactly the type of exposure the league needed, too, as many fans turned up for these exhibitions looking to root on their European heroes only to find themselves second-guessing their decision after the final whistle. “I really enjoy playing in those games,” said De Rosario, the deserved MVP in the game against Chelsea.
