Watford’s American defender, Jay DeMerit, speaks with Yanks Abroad about his chances of a call-up to the U.S. national team this month. Frankly, he isn’t holding his breath. “I have always said it is out of my control,” DeMerit said. “Because I have never known otherwise, it does not really bother me, but I hope it happens and when it does I will be elated.”
The 27-year old central defender is a huge fan favorite among the Watford faithful, particularly after his inspiring performances helped Watford’s reach the Premiership this season. Unfortunately, the club’s return to the English soccer’s second level is a virtual certainty with just nine games to go this season.
Watford manager Aidy Boothroyd is also keen on a U.S. call-up for DeMerit. Last year he tried to persuade former national team coach Bruce Arena to take him to the World Cup, to no avail. However, given Eddie Pope’s international retirement and injury to Corey Gibbs, DeMerit may yet get his shot. YA says Boothroyd has spoken with Bob Bradley about possibly taking him to the USA’s games against Ecuador and Guatemala later this month. The squad will be announced in a few weeks.
