Former New England Revolution defender Michael Parkhurst has revealed why he signed for Danish club Nordsjaelland during the offseason — it was the only team that didn’t want to take a look at him first on trial.
“We had guys coming in [at New England] on trial and potential future teammates don’t really treat you too well and you never really know what they’ll be doing the week you’re in,” he told Andrew Hush in the first installment of a two-part interview. “They can do a lot of tactical stuff, which makes things hard. So I was not keen on going on trial and most of the other teams that were interested wanted me to go in on trial first. Nordsjaelland was the exception so then it just came down to sorting out a contract, and it ended up being a good opportunity for me to further my career.”
Parkhurst admitted he “didn’t really know too much about” the Danish league apart from what he’d heard from national team colleagues Danny Califf and Heath Pearce. And how long was he on Nordsjaelland’s radar? “I think they saw a game or two live but I don’t know for sure. They did see a lot of tape on me as well.” Sounds like both sides scrupulously did their homework. Parkhurst did not say if his next career move would involve throwing a dart at a map of the world.
