In October, U.S. Soccer President Sunil Gulati said that the U.S. would have a national team coach by the end of November. Here we are in the first week of December-with the first U.S. international since the World Cup little more than a month away-, and still no coach. A Fox Soccer report today claimed that the announcement of Juergen Klinsmann as national team coach is imminent. Last week, Steve Cherundolo, a national team member, told German television that Klinsmann would soon be unveiled “according to my information.” Over the weekend, German newspaper Das Bild also reported that the U.S would soon unveil Klinsmann. However, ESPN later countered these reports with the following statement from the U.S. Soccer Federation: “I can tell you with 100 percent certainty that no deal has been reached with any of our coaching candidates at this time.” The Fox Soccer column admits that no deal had yet been reached, and the Klinsmann camp also refused to comment, but sources told columnist Jaime Trecker that the official announcement would be made within two weeks. “No deal is done, nor [is one] a forgone conclusion,” the U.S. federation source told ESPN. “And a date to announce has not been set.” No date has been set, although the U.S. has agreed to play a friendly against Denmark on January 20. It would appear that if any hard deadline exists, it would be before the end of the year to prepare a squad for that meeting.
