U.S. women’s national team coach Tony DiCicco has announced the 18-player roster for U.S. Women’s Cup ’98, which will be held Sept. 12-20 in several eastern cities. Because this tournament is being played in the fall, the U.S. will be without its collegiate players, most notably North Carolina’s Tiffany Roberts (67 caps), Cindy Parlow (42) and Lorrie Fair (33), but the team will still feature all eleven starters from the 1996 Olympic gold-medal match. In addition, DiCicco will give a first look to midfielder Jill Rutten, who starred at N.C. State in the late 1980s. Rutten, 30, has played professionally in Japan, Germany, Italy and Sweden. Here is the U.S. women’s roster: Goalkeepers — Tracy Ducar, Briana Scurry. Defenders — Joy Fawcett, Carla Overbeck, Christie Pearce, Kate Sobrero, Sara Whalen. Midfielders — Michelle Akers, Brandi Chastain, Julie Foudy, Shannon MacMillan, Jill Rutten, Tisha Venturini. Forwards — Robin Confer, Mia Hamm, Debbie Keller, Kristine Lilly, Tiffeny Milbrett.
