The USA defeated Mexico, 2-0, in a friendly before 61,072 fans at the Los Angeles Coliseum. Landon Donovan, the 18-year-old star who was left on the bench for most of the U.S. Olympic campaign in Australia by U-23 coach Clive Charles, scored and assisted in the victory. Coach Bruce Arena brought Donovan, considered the one of the most talented young players the USA has ever produced, into the game midway through the first half for an injured Chris Henderson. In the 50th minute, Clint Mathis found Donovan on a well-timed attacking run. Donovan touched the ball around the charging Mexican goalkeeper and finished to give the U.S. a 1-0 lead. In the 79th minute, Donovan was again involved in creating a U.S. goal as he fed Olympic teammate Josh Wolff, who knocked the ball around the Mexican goalkeeper near the top of the penalty area.
