With regular Rangers midfielders Barry Ferguson and Allan McGregor serving a two-week suspension after a pair of controversial off-field incidents (a drunk/disorderly bout followed by obscene gesture from the bench) while representing the Scotland national team last week, it looks like it’s time for young Maurice Edu to step into a starting role once occupied by “Captain America” himself, Claudio Reyna.
While Ferguson and McGregor are now persona non grata at the club and with Scottish fans on the whole, a thankful Edu admits that “they [Ferguson and McGregor] have been great for me. I haven’t been playing, but I have been watching, and developing and training with them has been good.”
If he is called upon to fill either of their roles — the famed Scottish side is just three points back from longtime rival Celtic — it will be only Edu’s sixth start since arriving from Toronto FC in August, as the past season for him has admittedly been “in and out” with a lot of time on the bench and only getting games “here and there.” But Edu seems ready, saying “I have patiently been waiting and now the chance is here for me to come into the team.”
