For the second time in three days, Arsenal knocked Liverpool out of a cup competition with an overwhelming victory.
On Saturday, it was Czech Thomas Rosicky who scored twice to lead the Gunners to a 3-1 win in the fourth round of the English FA Cup. On Tuesday, Brazilian forward Julio Baptista was the hero, scoring four goals to lead Arsenal to a 6-3 win in the quarterfinals of the League Cup and move into the semifinals against north London rival Tottenham. The six goals were the most the Reds had given up at home in 76 years.
Both teams made nine changes from Saturday's lineups for the less important League Cup clash. Baptista got a chance to shine after five difficult months in London since his transfer from Real Madrid.
''I always believed it was in there,'' he said. ''It takes time to adapt to English football.''
To make Liverpool's awful night complete, Chilean winger Mark Gonzalez and his replacement, Spaniard Luis Garcia, both went off injured.
