A Beckham-less England side swept away European Champion Greece 4-0 at Old Trafford this afternoon on goals from new captain John Terry, Frank Lampard, and Peter Crouch (2). It’s a successful start to Steve McClaren’s England managerial career, which began last week in controversy as the former assistant to Sven Goran Eriksson dropped David Beckham for the first time since his England call-up. Steve Gerrard filled in the right side, with Owen Hargreaves, the new No. 7, in the middle with Lampard and then Stewart Downing on the left. John Terry powered a header home in the 14th minute, Frank Lampard chipped Greece goalkeeper Antonis Nikopolidis in the 30th, and Crouch then scored a tap-in and another header in the 35th and 42nd minutes. The last time these two teams played, also at Old Trafford, Beckham stepped forward to power home a 90th minute free kick that qualified England for the 2002 World Cup.
