Eight WUSA players from Norway, Germany and Sweden reached the semifinals of the European Championship. Denmark, a surprise winner of Group A after shutting out Norway, 1-0, is the fourth semifinalist. The WUSA players in the semis are Germany’s Doris Fitschen (Philadelphia), Maren Meinert (Boston) and Bettina Wiegmann (Boston); Sweden’s Kristin Bengtsson (San Diego) and Ulrika Karlsson (San Diego); Norway’s Hege Riise (Carolina), Bente Nordby (Carolina) and Dagny Mellgren (Boston). The Danes do not have any WUSA players, although the Bay Area pursued Danish defender Lene Terp. Group A winner Germany will play Group B runner-up Norway in the first semi on July 4 in Ulm, Germany.
