Host Portugal stayed alive in the European Championship with a 2-0 victory over Russia on Wednesday.

Goals from Maniche and substitute Rui Costa gave Portugal the win. Russia, whose goalkeeper Sergei Ovchinnikov was sent off just before halftime for handling the ball outside the box, became the first team to be eliminated.

Spain tied Greece, 1-1, in the other Group A game. Fernando Morientes scored for Spain in the first half after being fed by Raul, who intercepted a backpass by defender Michalis Kapsis. Angelos Haristeas scored the equalizer in the 66th minute.

Spain and Greece lead Group A with four points apiece. Portugal has three. If Greece ties or beats Russia on Sunday, Portugal needs to beat Spain to advance to the quarterfinals.
